Professional Background

Dr. Snelson received her B.S from California State University at Hayward in 1995. Following graduation, she started her M.S in geophysics at the University of Texas at El Paso working on the Deep Probe project. While at UTEP she worked, as an intern, for Amoco in 1996 studying basin structures using gravity and magnetic data in offshore Angola. She finished her M.S. in 1998 and stayed on at UTEP to work on her Ph.D. Her dissertation includes a seismic hazard investigation using seismic refraction data in the Seattle basin, Washington State and a deep crustal project using seismic refraction data to studying the crustal evolution of the Southern Rocky Mountains. During her graduate studies, she had the opportunity to travel extensively around the western U.S, Ireland, and central Europe for fieldwork. Cathy recently joined the faculty in January 2002.

Research

Dr. Snelson’s research primarily focuses on integrating controlled-source seismology and non-seismic techniques to study the structure and composition of the near surface as well as the continental lithosphere. Current research projects include the structure and geometry of the Las Vegas basin for seismic hazards, intraplate deformation in the Walker Lane and North Carolina, Evaporate karst development in southern Nevada, and salt tectonics in central Mexico and Utah. She is also involved in setting up strong and weak motion recording stations throughout the Las Vegas Valley for earthquake monitoring. Past projects includes a seismic hazard study of the Seattle basin, Western Washington State ( Dry SHIPS ’99 and Kingdome SHIPS ‘00) and studying the crustal evolution of the Rocky Mountains (Deep Probe ’95 and CD-ROM ’99). Future projects include investigation the high-velocity lowermost crust of the Wyoming province in central and eastern Montana, a series of investigations in the Basin and Range studying the structure and evolution of the region in conjunction with USArray.
