In the UNLV Department of Communication Studies (COM) there are faculty members (and their students) who conduct social-scientific research studies. Through their work, students have opportunities to accrue research credits, which may count as COURSE credit or EXTRA credit in COM classes. Students may earn credit in two ways:

1) participate in research studies, and/or 2) complete the approved alternative, which is summarizing journal articles supplied by faculty researchers.

STUDENTS: First, consult your course syllabi for information about how many research credits your instructor is requiring in a given semester. Next, REGISTER with the COM Research Participation System. Then, DOWNLOAD the necessary handouts–COM SONA—Student Handout and COM Research Participation-Article Summary Handout. Finally, AFTER YOU SIGN UP, periodically VISIT the website for new studies that might become available.

Fall 2012 Deadlines

ALL STUDENT QUESTIONS or CONCERNS about research credit must be addressed to the appropriate person by the Friday BEFORE finals week each semester. Students may not appeal credit after this date. Inquiries should FIRST go to the INVESTIGATOR conducting the study and THEN the Research Participation Coordinator.

STUDY SIGN-UP: 5:00pm Monday, November 26th.

REQUESTS FOR ARTICLES TO SUMMARIZE: 5:00pm Monday, November 26th.

OVERALL DEADLINE FOR EARNING RESEARCH CREDIT (course or extra credit): 5:00pm Friday, November 30th. Study participation must be completed and alternative summaries submitted to the appropriate researcher.

If you have any questions or concerns, please email the Coordinator, Dr. Tara McManus (com.research@unlv.edu).
