I am interested in how animals respond to environmental stresses. My primary research interest focuses on metabolic depression in animals. In 34/35 major invertebrate phyla and throughout the vertebrates, some form of metabolic depression has been noted. Despite fundamental differences in the ecology and physiology of these diverse animals, they must all depress energy-consumptive processes of anabolism and catabolism to survive the metabolic depression. My laboratory studies the mechansims that underlie these offswitches of metabolism using a variety of approaches from the whole organismal to the molecular.
