My suggestion for your daily routine and getting my help.

Online lectures/materials:
These lectures are excellent.  They were composed by Dr. Lavon B. Page, Professor Emeritus at North Carolina State.  He has a clear, gentle voice and a relaxing, mild Southern accent.  Please listen to them!  In the previous two semesters that I taught this course online, I used only powerpoint slides and handouts.  Based on numerous students' feeback, that was not enough.  This material is somewhat difficult to teach yourself, and I am convinced that these lectures will be a great aid to your learning this stuff.

Finite Math Links:  I will keep updating this list...great for extra practice.
Quick Course Notes: A set of course notes made by the guy who wrote your online hw.

Note: The lectures are Quicktime videos.  The time of each video is noted below.  They should open automatically in your browser if you have a Quicktime Plug-in.  If they don't, I recommend downloading the latest version of Mozilla Firefox.  Otherwise, you'll need to download Quicktime manually.

My suggestion for your daily routine.
First and foremost, you must not get behind.  Check the facebook group page every day for updates, special directions, or links that I may post.  Then look at the course calendar on your syllabus and for each section of the day do the following:
  1. Watch the movie(s) for that section.
  2. Scan over the corresponding section of the text looking for relevant material and worked examples.
  3. Work the book homework on your own.  After finishing, check your answers with my online solutions.
  4. For problems that stump you, read the book more carefully and look for relevant examples before looking at the solution.
  5. See if the online homework is available.  This will be treated more like quizzes than hw.  Attempt the quiz.
  6. If you're totally stuck on any question, post it on the discussion board for help from me and your classmates.
  7. Compile a list of questions that were difficult, confusing, or interesting to you.  Tune into my live Q&A web-streamed office hour sessions and ask me the question via chat.
  8. If you are especially motivated and are still hungry for more or if you are having a lot of difficulty, maybe some one-on-one with me or a tutor will help. You can arrange a one-on-one with me in two ways:  in person, by arranging an appointment with me at UNLV in my office; or online via a webcam phone call, also to be made by appointment.  I have both an AIM account and a Windows Live Messenger account for that purpose.  If you think a tutor would help, UNLV has tutors M-F in my office building, CDC Bld 7.  Please understand that I am not a tutor; you should approach me having already attempted to understand completely the material given the resources provided.  A tutor's job is more or less to help you through steps 1-7.  My job is to help you once you have worked through steps 1-7 and still possess lingering issues.

Your main criteria for whether you're learning what you need to is very simple: If you can do the online hw and get most of it correct, you're in great shape. Many of the problems you see on the tests will be at about that level (and probably a little easier).

Quicktime Trouble Shooting

Question: When I click on the link for a movie nothing happens or I get an error saying that Windows Media Player cannot open the file. What should I do?

Answer: This probably means that you do not have Quicktime installed - even if you think you do. If you are using Windows, please try the steps below. (Note: If you are on a Mac it is highly unlikely that you will
have this issue, but if you do please contact Dr. Page or Jenn for assistance.)

  1. Follow the link to Quicktime (http://www.apple.com/quicktime/) and choose "download".
  2. Under the section for the *free player* select your operating system and enter any other required information. Click the button to download. Choose to place the downloaded file (which will be called
something like QuicktimeInstaller.exe on your desktop so that you can find it easily for the next step). This download is for the INSTALLER - not the program itself. You still have more steps to complete in order to install the program. If you stop now the program will not operate properly (this is usually where students have gone wrong if they think they have installed the program but it is still not working). This download takes only a few seconds.
  3. Go to your desktop and find the file you just downloaded. Click on it. You will be walked through the steps to install the program. This part takes a few minutes to complete. Restart your computer if it suggests that you should.
  4. Go to the course page and click a movie link to verify that it nowworks.
  5. If everything is working properly you may remove the .exe file from your desktop as it is no longer necessary.
