Miscellaneous Grading Policies

If you do not correctly fill in your ID number on the answer form:
If you do not correctly fill in your ID number on the answer form, one or more points will be deducted from your score. This rule applies to all tests, quizzes, homework using answer forms. Additional points may be deducted for missing name or other important information.

If you do not correctly fill in your name on the answer form:
If you do not correctly fill in your name on the answer form, one or more points will be deducted from your score.  This rule applies to all tests, quizzes, homework using answer forms.

If you think that some part of your test was not scored properly:
If you think that some item or items on a test were not scored properly, you should make a written notation on the test explaining your concern and give the test to me for review. I hope to be as accurate as possible with grading and I will make any score adjustments I think are consistent with that objective. An implication of that, however, is that there is no guarantee your score won't go down. The review of your test won't necessarily be limited to the question you want reconsidered.

If you skip the final examination:
If you do skip the final examination and it is a required part of the course grading system, you will receive an F for the course.

If you cannot take a test on the scheduled date:
If you cannot take a test on the scheduled date, you should let me know in advance.  Under some circumstances it may be possible to make some kind of arrangement such as taking the test at a different time. In general, it is impossible to take a test more than one day before the scheduled date of the test for the simple reason that I don’t complete writing the test until the day before it is scheduled to be given. Tests should not be considered optional and test dates should not be considered flexible. You must have a very good reason for not taking a test at the scheduled time and date. Without such a good reason, you will receive an F for the test.

If you miss a midterm examination:
As explained in the syllabus, I don't give makeup exams. There are several reasons for this, but the main ones are, first, that a makeup exam is not accurately comparable with the exam that the rest of the students took. Second, writing an exam takes me several hours or days, and I just don't have the time to write another test. Third, since it is important that students assume the responsibility of taking tests at the scheduled times, it would be inappropriate to have a system that effectively allows students to take exams whenever they wish.

If you miss a test without prior arrangement, you will be assigned a grade for the test equal to one grade step lower than the lowest grade on your other tests. For example, if you miss Test 2 without prior arrangement, you will be assigned a grade for that test equal to one step lower than whatever you receive on tests 1, 3, and 4. If you get A's on these three tests, then you'll get an A- for Test 2. This means that you can still get an A for the course. Tests should not be considered optional and test dates should not be considered flexible. You must have a very good reason for not taking a test at the scheduled time and date. Without such a good reason, you will receive an F for the test.

If you are late turning in the take-home part of a test:
If you are late turning in the take-home part of a test, five or more points will be subtracted from your score for that part of the test.

If you fail to turn in the take-home part of a test:
If you fail to turn in the take-home part of a test, you will receive a score equal to five less than what you received on the in-class part of the test.

If there is a seating chart for an exam and you don't sit in the seat assigned to you:
In some classes I my have assigned seats for tests or quizzes. Assigned seats help to avoid problems asociated with cheating or suspected cheating. If nothing else, the mere fact that I go to the trouble of producing a seating chart should emphasize that I am very concerned about cheating. If you do not sit in the seat assigned to you, points will be deducted from the quiz or test for which seats were assigned
