Schedule -- Fall 2009

The course covers all the chapters in the textbook except Chapter 15.
Chapter
The knowledge and skills of statistics are cumulative: what you learn one week will be used the next week and throughout the course. Therefore you should discipline yourself to master the material as it is presented: shaky understandings early on will make the course very difficult later on, just as a shaky foundation makes construction of a building problematic. Don't get behind! Most students find it impossible to recover if they fall behind.

Therefore, to encourage you to keep up, I have structured the course so that there is a quiz or an exam in every week of the semester except the first week.

It is your responsibility to obtain the materials, gain access to the proper computer equipment, and keep up with the schedule shown here.

Before the first day of class (August 24), you should: The course will proceed according to the following calendar:

Examinations and Grades

Examinations will by proctored by UNLV Distance Education, and will take place on the campus at UNLV (at a lopcation to be announced). It is also possible to make arrangements for proctors at other locations both within Nevada and around the world; contact the UNLV Office of Distance Education at (702) 895-0334. All examinations will be proctored by employees of Distance Education or their designees.

These examinations will be closed book, but I will provide Xerox copies of all equations and tables, and you may prepare and bring to the exam one 8½ X 11 inch double-sided 'cheat sheet' with whatever notes you desire. You may use a calculator during the exam.

Examinations 1, 2, 3, and 4 will each last 75 minutes and must begin between 8:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. on the day scheduled.

The last exam will be take home and will actually be two exams in one. One of these last exams, Examination 5, will cover Chapters 16, 17, and 18 and will have the same format as the first four exams. As with the previous exams, this score may be dropped if it is your lowest score. The other last exam will be the Cumulative Review Final Exam and will have the same format as Section C of the homework exercises for Chapters 10 through 18. The Cumulative Review Exam is not droppable.

Examination 5 and the Cumulative Review Final Exam are take home, open notes, open book, and are not timed. They are both due at the time shown on this schedule (which is the time shown for the final exam in the UNLV course schedule).

We will drop the your lowest score on the five chapter Examinations and the lab quiz composite score.

Your final grade will be therefore based on six equally weighted scores: the best five of the Examinations and lab quiz composite, and the Cumulative Review Final Exam. Note that the Cumulative Review Final Exam is not droppable. (We will drop your quiz composite score if it is your lowest score.)

There will be no make-up exams. If you miss an exam, that will be the score that will be dropped.

Laboratories

Laboratories serve three general purposes: to give help and practice in computational issues, to give eyeball-estimation practice, and (in the second half of the course) to provide cumulative practice in discriminating which test is appropriate to use in which situations.

Many laboratories will include ESTAT exercises. All laboratories will be described at appropriate times on the web.

The laboratories are included in the course schedule.

Lab Quizzes

Laboratory quizzes will be five-to-ten questions in a multiple choice format, administered on the web. You may take lab quizzes at any time and at any place. They are open book and are not timed. You must do your own work on the honor system.

There are ten laboratories, and therefore ten lab quizzes. Your lab grade will be based on the best nine quizzes (that is, we will drop your lowest quiz score).

The quizzes are found at the end of the lab assignment.

The laboratories are found in the course Schedule.
