Students with or at risk for problem behaviors: Betwixt and between teacher and parent expectations.
This study identified the domains that are considered important to teachers versus the domains considered important by parents and how a difference can impact student achievement in the school. The authors used participants from a longitudinal study that was completed at the University of California, Riverside. Using the Social Skills Rating System, teachers rated the importance of cooperation skills as critical. In contrast, parents rated self-control as critical. It is suggested that this contradiction in expectation may be what results in problems at school. It is suggested that early intervention between schools and families at the pre-kindergarten level may be most beneficial.
