Teaching a young child to appropriately gain attention of peers using a social story intervention.

Soenksen and Alper's article discussed a study conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of using social stories to teach young children with hyperlexia how to appropriately gain the attention of peers in a variety of school settings. The social stories in the intervention used were constructed using established guidelines. The authors discuss current research supporting social stories and specific teaching strategies thought to be effective when working with students with hyperlexia. The article defined the target behavior of obtaining peers attention as saying the name or looking in the eyes of peers. The researchers used a baseline across school settings design to analyze the effectiveness of the social stories intervention. The conclusion of the article states that the social stories intervention was successful in increasing two target behaviors across the settings.
