FIELD EXPERIENCE IN EDUCATIONAL ADMINISTRATION

Course Overview:
The course provides graduate
students to participate and observe in the school administrative setting.
Requirements:
Part #1: Prepare a proposed
plan (one pager) for fulfilling the requirements of the course and submit to
the instructor for approval. The plan must include the name of the mentor
principal, a list of the major activities and proposed dates for completing the
activities. (Due not
later than class session #3.)
Part #2: “Shadow” the mentor
principal for a full school workday.
Part #3: Maintain a log
detailing activities undertaken in part #2. Reflections should be included on
the information obtained throughout the experience, giving particular attention
to the nature and functions of the principalship, tensions encountered by
principals, and the demands of the decision-making process.
Part #4 Interview the mentor and one other
principal (not an Assistant Principal) regarding the principalship. The focus of
the interviews should be on the nature of the tasks performed, necessarily
adjustments made upon changing roles and becoming a principal; daily survival
techniques; leadership techniques; and establishing of a vision for their
personal leadership and for the school in general. Take careful notes and write
a brief (two page) summary report comparing/contrasting the responses received
from the principals.
A final oral report on the
field experience may be given by each student near the end of the semester.
Grading:
Grading is based
upon the quality of the materials submitted and the oral presentation
summarizing the field experience.
