Course Overview:

The course provides graduate students to participate and observe in the school administrative setting.

Requirements:

Part #1: Prepare a proposed plan (one pager) for fulfilling the requirements of the course and submit to the instructor for approval. The plan must include the name of the mentor principal, a list of the major activities and proposed dates for completing the activities. (Due not later than class session #3.)

Part #2: “Shadow” the mentor principal for a full school workday.

Part #3: Maintain a log detailing activities undertaken in part #2. Reflections should be included on the information obtained throughout the experience, giving particular attention to the nature and functions of the principalship, tensions encountered by principals, and the demands of the decision-making process.

Part #4  Interview the mentor and one other principal (not an Assistant Principal) regarding the principalship. The focus of the interviews should be on the nature of the tasks performed, necessarily adjustments made upon changing roles and becoming a principal; daily survival techniques; leadership techniques; and establishing of a vision for their personal leadership and for the school in general. Take careful notes and write a brief (two page) summary report comparing/contrasting the responses received from the principals.

A final oral report on the field experience may be given by each student near the end of the semester.

Grading:

Grading is based upon the quality of the materials submitted and the oral presentation summarizing the field experience.
