INTRODUCTION TO EDUCATIONAL ADMINISTRATION

Course Description:

 

The course is introductory in nature and focuses on organizational and leadership theory and practice, with emphasis upon schools as social systems. Content will include material on leadership, organizational structure and function, employee motivation, decision-making, school climate, organizational change, and conflict resolution.

 

The course is primarily lecture-based, with additional learning opportunities provided through classroom discussions in large and small groups, student presentations, case studies, and workshop experiences.

 

 

Course Objectives:

 

Upon completion of the course:

 

            Students will be able to identify, discuss and apply major leadership theories in real life settings.

            Students will be able to discuss the concepts of motivation, vision, and leadership and will be prepared to develop a personal vision and leadership statement.

            Students will have developed and appreciation of the complexities of organizational change process and leadership theories when applied in school settings.

            Students will have developed enhanced library and electronic research skills and will have demonstrated the ability to prepare carefully researched and closely constructed written reports.

Course Requirements

 

Prompt, on-time, and regular attendance. Excuses granted in advance on an individual basis only.

 

Active class participation

 

Individually written analysis/report on a chosen textbook concerning organizations/leadership. Maximum of two typed pages. (Bibliography available on CD.)

 

Participation in classroom workshop activities

 

Preparation of a 20 page term paper on an aspect of administrative theory. Papers are to be typewritten and double spaced, with required bibliography. APA, Turabian, or Chicago style formats are acceptable. Check with the professor prior to undertaking this assignment. A brief oral report may be made to the class on the results of the study.

Or:

Alternatively, conduct of an oral interview and analysis of the leadership characteristics of a former (retired) CCSD principal. Students will be expected to submit the audio tape(s) of the interview, which shall be at least one hour and no more than two hours in length, plus a complete typed transcript of the interview on a 3 ½” floppy disk in Microsoft Word . Students will prepare an analysis of the former principal’s leadership style using several of the models presented during class. A brief oral report may be made to the class on the results of the study.

 

Brief weekly quizzes (13 in number) will be administered via WebCT. Each will be released for 7 days, during which students are expected to complete and file them.

 

Additional assignments as required.

 

A final examination will be administered.

 

 

Point Distribution in Grading

 

Class Participation –---  20 points

Text Analysis/Report— 50 points

Term Project Report--- 100 points

Quizzes (total of  13)--  130 points

Final Exam              ---  100 points

            Total                   400 points

 

Grading

A total of 400 points may be earned during the semester. The following grading scale will be employed:

A =  97%

A- = 92%

B+ = 86%

B  =  80%

B- =  75%

C+ = 70%

C  =  65%

C- =  60%

D  =   55%

 

Instructional Methods and Technology Access

The course is primarily lecture and multimedia based. Reading of

course materials prior to scheduled instruction is an absolute

requirement. Students will need to have mastered internet and E-mail skills

and will be required to provide an E-mail address for student-professor out of class communications.
