Reading and Homework Assignments

Readings from Language, Proof and Logic, by Barwise and Etchemendy, are listed by chapter and section numbers, with page numbers in parentheses. Homework assignments from the book are listed by chapter.exercise number.
  • For Aug. 30: Read the Introduction and Ch. 1.1-1.3 (pp. 1-15, 17-25). Do the "You try it" Exercise and Ex. 1.2-1.4, but do not Submit them to the Grade Grinder. Just try them out and get used to the software. Once you Register your software and Submit problems to the Grade Grinder no one else can ever use your CD-ROM, so you cannot sell it to someone else.
  • For Sep. 4: No Class (Labor Day!)
  • For Sep. 6: Read Ch. 1.4-1.5 and 2.1 (pp. 28-34, 41-44). Now Submit Ex. 1.1-1.4 and do Ex. 1.9. 1.13-14, and 2.1. Submit all these Exercises to the Grade Grinder (selecting the Class Section appropriate for you) by noon on 9/6.
  • For Sep. 11: Read Ch. 2.2-2.5 (pp. 46-65). Do Ex. 2.2-2.4 (on paper to hand in at the beginning of class), and 2.8-2.14 (turn in informal proofs of the valid ones on paper; Submit a counterexample world to the Grade Grinder for any invalid ones).
  • For Sep. 13: Do Ex. 2.17-2.20 and 2.24-2.27. Submit them to the Grade Grinder by noon. Then read Ch 3.1-3.3 (pp. 67-76).
  • For Sep. 18: Do Ex. 3.2-3.3, 3.5-3.10. Submit them by noon on 9/18. Then read Ch 3.4-3.8 (pp. 77-91).
  • For Sep. 20: Do Ex. 3.12-3.16, 3.18-3.23. Submit them by noon on 9/20 (hand in Ex. 3.19 on paper at the beginning of class). Then read Ch. 4.1-4.3 (pp. 93-113).
  • For Sep. 25: Do Ex. 4.1-4.2, 4.4-4.7, 4.12-4.18. Submit them by noon on 9/25. Then read Ch. 4.4-4.6 (pp. 114-125).
  • For Sep. 27: Do Ex. 4.22-4.24, 4.29-4.31, 4.39-4.40. Submit them by noon on 9/27. Then read Ch. 7 (pp. 176-194).
  • For Oct. 2: Do Ex. 7.1-7.8, 7.12-13, 7.15-7.16, 7.18, 7.25, 7.27. Submit them by noon on 10/2. Then read Ch. 5 (pp. 127-141).
  • For Oct. 4: Start studying for the First Test, which will be on Mon. 10/9. (Note the new date!) Come to class with review questions about concepts, techniques, and homework problems you want clarified.
  • For Oct. 9: First Test!
  • For Oct. 11: Be prepared to do some replacement questions for some of the test problems in the first half of class (I will then give you whichever score is higher between these problems and the original test problems). Read Handout 1 on Semantic Tableaux.
  • For Oct. 16: Read Handout 1 on Semantic Tableaux (distributed in class). Do the exercises on the Semantic Tableaux Homework handout. Hand the homework in at the beginning of class, but make a copy to have for yourself.
  • For Oct. 18: Do the exercises on the Semantic Tableaux Homework 2 handout. Hand the homework in at the beginning of class, but make a copy for yourself. Re-read Chapter 5.
  • For Oct. 23: Do Ex. 5.1-5.4, 5.10, 5.17-5.18. Read Ch. 6.1-6.3 (pp. 142-163). Then do Ex. 6.1, 6.4-6.7, 6.10, 6.12, 6.15. Turn in written homework problems at the beginning of class; Submit computer problems by noon on 10/23.
  • For Oct. 30: Re-read Ch 6.3 and read Ch. 6.4-6.6 (pp. 155-175). Do Ex. 6.11, 6.13, 6.18-6.20, 6.24-6.27. Then read Ch. 8.1-8.2 (pp. 198-213). Do Ex. 8.3-8.6, 8.10, 8.16. Turn in the written Exercises at the beginning of class (make a copy for yourself), and Submit the computer Exercises by noon on 10/30.
  • For Nov. 1: Re-do the Readings and Exercises assigned for 10/30. If the Grade Grinder won't let you re-Submit problems to me, re-Submit them sending a report just to yourself, and print out a copy of that for me.
  • For Nov. 6: Do Ex. 6.28-6.32 and 8.18-8.25. Also, start studying for the Second Test (covering Ch. 5-8, along with Semantic Tableaux), which will be on 11/8.
  • For Nov. 8: Second Test!. Bring a bluebook to write your test in. And bring an extra one for someone who forgets.
  • For Nov. 13: Read Ch. 8.3-8.4 (pp. 214-223). Do Ex. 8.44-8.49. Then read Ch 9.1-9.3 (pp. 227-233) and do Ex. 9.1-9.2. Submit the Exercises by noon on 11/13.
  • For Nov. 15: Read Ch. 9.4-9.5 (pp. 234-241). Do Ex. 9.3, 9.5, 9.6, 9.9. Submit the Exercises by noon on 11/15.
  • For Nov. 20: Read Ch. 9.6-9.8 (pp. 243-256). Do Ex. 8.50-8.53, 9.12-9.14, 9.16, 9.17, 9.25. Then read Ch. 10.1-10.4 (pp. 257-282). Submit the Exercises by noon on 11/20.
  • For Nov. 22: Do Ex. 9.18, 9.19, 10.1, 10.8, 10.22, 10.24-10.27. Read Ch. 11.1-11.2 (pp. 289-296). Submit the Exercises by noon on 11/22.
  • For Nov. 29: Do Ex. 10.10-10.15, 10.28, 10.29. Read Ch. 11.3-11.7 (pp. 298-314).
  • For Dec. 4: Do Ex. 11.3, 11.4, 11.9, 11.11, 11.13, 11.17. Read Ch. 12.1-12.4 (pp. 319-334) and Ch. 13.1-13.3 (pp. 342-358).
  • For Dec. 6: Re-read Ch. 12.1-12.4 (pp. 319-334) and Ch. 13.1-13.3 (pp. 342-358). Do Ex. 12.1, 12.4, 12.6, 12.8, 13.1, 13.10, 13.12, 13.17. Submit computer exercises by noon on 12/6; hand-in written exercises at the beginning of class.
  • For Dec. 7: Thursday Review Session, 3pm-5pm, CDC 425 (across the hall from my office). Review problems to try: 13.2-13.5, 13.13-13.16. More involved problems to try: 13.6-13.9.
  • For Dec. 8: Friday Review Session, 11am-1pm, CBC C133.
  • For Dec. 9: Saturday Review Session, 3pm-5pm, CBC C133.
