Reading Assignments
(Most of the readings are from Philosophy of Natural Science by Carl Hempel and The Structure of Scientific Revolutions by Thomas Kuhn. These readings are listed by author and chapter number(s). The remaining readings are from a coursepack available at New University Copies located at 11 Waverly Place. These are labeled "photocopy".)
- For May 15: Read "The Fixation of Belief" by Peirce (photocopy).
- For May 16: Read Hempel, Chapters 1 and 2.
- For May 17: Read Hempel, Chapter 3.
- For May 21: Read Hempel, Chapters 4 and 5.
- For May 22: Read Hempel, Chapter 6.
- For May 24: Read Hempel, Chapter 7.
- For May 29: Read Hempel, Chapter 8 and Kuhn, Chapters I-II. Also, get started on the First Paper. Be sure to read my Paper Requirements and Policies.
- For May 30: Read Kuhn, Chapters III-V.
- For May 31: Read Kuhn, Chapters VI-VIII.
- For Jun 4: Read Kuhn, Chapters IX-X. Also, study for the Midterm Exam, which will be on this day.
- For Jun 6: Class canceled.
- For Jun 7: Class canceled.
- For Jun 11: Read Kuhn, Chapters XI-XIII and the Postscript. Also, pick up the coursepack from New University Copies at 11 Waverly Place.
- For Jun 12: Start reading "Arguments Concerning Scientific Realism" by van Fraassen (photocopy).
- For Jun 13: Finish reading "Arguments Concerning Scientific Realism". Skip pp. 27-30.
- For Jun 14: Read "A Case for Scientific Realism" by McMullin (photocopy).
- For Jun 18: Read "The Current Status of Scientific Realism" by Boyd (photocopy).
- For Jun 19: Finish "The Current Status of Scientific Realism." Also, get started on the Second Paper.
- For Jun 20: Read "The Natural Ontological Attitude" by Fine (photocopy).
- For Jun 21: Last class meeting. Study for the Final Exam, which will be on this day.
- For Jun 25: Second Papers due by 3pm (and I mean 3pm). I will be in my office from 2pm-3pm.
