(Readings from the textbook Metaphysics: Contemporary Readings, edited by Steven D. Hales are listed by selection title, author, and chapter number (or page numbers). Readings labeled "photocopy" are in a coursepack available at New University Copies located at 11 Waverly Place.)
- For May 15: Read "Preface to the Student" by Hales (pp. xv-xvi), then the first selections (Book I, Parts 1 and 2, Book IV, Parts 1 and 2, and Book VI, Part 1) from Metaphysics by Aristotle (photocopy).
- For May 16: Read "Idealism" by Russell (photocopy) and "Introduction to the Realism Debates" by Blackburn (pp. 47-51).
- For May 17: Read "Why There Isn't a Ready-Made World" by Putnam (5).
- For May 22: Read "Putnam's Pragmatic Realism" by Sosa (6). Also read "A Naturalistic Defense of Realism" (7) and "Postscript" (8) by Devitt.
- For May 23: Read "Introduction to Truth" by Schmitt (p. 107-118).
- For May 24: Read "The Pragmatist Theory of Truth" by Haack (10) and "Truth as Ideal Coherence" by Rescher (11).
- For May 29: Read "Truth as Correspondence" by David (13). Also, get started on the First Paper. Be sure to read my Paper Requirements and Policies.
- For May 31: Read "The Deflationary View of Truth" by Horwich (12).
- For Jun 4: Read "On What There Is" by Quine (14). Also, study for the Midterm Exam, which will be on this day.
- For Jun 6: Class canceled. Pick up the coursepack (which is finally available) from New University Copies at 11 Waverly Place.
- For Jun 7: Class canceled.
- For Jun 11: Read "The World of Universals" and "Our Knowledge of Universals" by Russell (photocopy) and "Universals as Attributes" by Armstrong (19).
- For Jun 13: Read "'Ostrich Nominalism' or 'Mirage Realism'?" by Devitt (photocopy) and "Against 'Ostrich' Nominalism: A Reply to Michael Devitt" by Armstrong (photocopy).
- For Jun 14: Read "The Metaphysics of Abstract Particulars" by Campbell (photocopy).
- For Jun 18: Read "Introduction to Substance" by Lowe (pp. 371-376) and "Three Versions of the Bundle Theory" by Van Cleve (26).
- For Jun 19: Read "The Independence Criterion of Substance" by Rosenkrantz and Hoffman (27).
- For Jun 20: Read "Particulars in Particular Clothing: Three Trope Theories of Substance" by Simons (28). Also, get started on the Second Paper.
- For Jun 21: Last class meeting. Study for the Final Exam, which will be on this day.
- For Jun 25: Second Papers due by 3pm (and I mean 3pm). I will be in my office from 2pm-3pm.
