| THE
NORSE PANTHEON: FREYJA AVATARS | ||||||||||||||||
|
FREYJA
AVATARS | | |||||||||||||||
| THE VÁN-GODDESS: Freyja is known generically as Vánadísir, "Van-goddess," and most of the other females in the Norse pantheon seem to be avatars of Freyja. For example, her husband is said to be Óðr ("Rager"); his name is simply the unaugmented form of Óðinn. Óðin's "regular" wife is Frigg, but the name is cognate with Freyja (and in the masculine, Freyr, whom Adam of Bremen calls Fricco). In her wantonness and greed Frigg seems similar to Freyja, and she is said to weep tears of gold, which is a common feature of Freyja. SÍF: This fertility goddess is nominally the husband of Þórr, although he has his children by giantesses. Her hair of solid gold (Loki stole her real hair, then cheated the dwarves he hired to replace it with hair of real gold) is reminiscent of Freyja's love of gold. Otherwise this female has no identifying characteristics. GERÐ: This Otherworld female becomes the husband of Freyr, but has similarities to Freyja in her Valkyrja-like role with the slain. | ||||||||||||||||
