FREYJA |
| |||||||||||||||
| NAME: Her name is the feminine form of her brother Freyr, and thus means "lady." CHARACTERISTICS: Like her brother Freyr, she is associated with a golden-bristled boar. Her cart, however, is drawn by two cats. A typical fertility goddess, she is a wanton who proves attractive to males of several races -- dwarves and giants as well as men. It is she who teaches the art of seiðr to Óðinn. Characteristically of a fertility goddess, she also is connected with death, sharing the battle-slain with Óðinn. WORSHIP: There is little direct evidence of her worship, but as a fertility goddess of the land formal sites may not have been considered necessary. Even more than her brother Freyr, she is associated with the local, chthonic land-spirits. These latter rarely make an appearance in the male- and warrior-oriented written texts, but were extremely important. | ||||||||||||||||
