| Professor Julian Kilker Overview We all use media technologies, but most people don’t consider the larger contexts of their design and use. But how people and media technologies interact has key implications for our personal and professional lives, and for society at large. Just as we have typical stages and predictable events in our lives—such as being born, youth, graduation, having children, retirement, and so on—there are predictable events in the “lives” of technologies that are interesting and important. We’ll use the metaphor of the “lifecycle,” along with a wide variety of resources to explore media technologies during their (1) design and development; (2) marketing and diffusion; (3) user resistance and modification; and (4) obsolescence and afterlife.
