MapGuide and Feature Data Objects (FDO)

- FDO Toolbox is a windows application to process, create and manage geospatial data.
- It is written in C# and uses the Feature Data Objects (FDO) API.

MapGuide Web Services API

Site Administrator Service - used to manage users, groups and a session
Resource Service - access to repository (Layouts, Layers, Maps, ...)
Drawing Service
Feature Service - access feature data sources, FDO providers added to the repository
Mapping Service - very processor intensive, used to save a map as DWF (ePlot or eMap), creates a view of a map, visualization and plotting functions.

Rendering Service - very processor intensive, used to save a map as PNG, GIF or JPG, creates the final map image for AJAX viewer

Unmanaged Datasets

I'm using products like FME from Safe Software and AutoCAD Civil 3D to create my SDF3 files. Without using MapGuide Studio, how I place these SDF3 files in a directory which the MapGuide Server can see?
Step 0: create SDF using FME
Step 1: setup aliases
- Login to MapGuide Site Administrator (http://localhost:8008/mapguide/mapadmin/login.php)
- Click Add Alias under the Configure External Files heading
- Alias Name: gisdata
- Path to External Folder: c:\gisdata
  - Note the external folder can have subfolders which contain the unmanaged files. No need to make an alias for C:\gisdata\flood and C:\gisdata\sewer, just make an alias C:\gisdata to view both folders.
  - no need to place the unmanaged files (SDF, SHP, Raster) in a directory which is visible to the internet (e.g. C:\Program Files\MapGuideOpenSource2.0\WebServerExtensions\www)
Step 2: upload the SDF/SHP file to the alias directory
Step 3: using MapGuide Studio, File -> New -> Data Connection... (or in the Site Explorer Pane, right click a folder and then choose New -> Data Connection...)
Step 4: Select a feature provider, OSGeo FDO Provider for SDF
Step 5: Click the File button to populate the File to connect to: box
Step 6: Click the Test Connection button

MapGuide Resources

"Autodesk MapGuide Enterprise stores map definitions, layer definitions, data connections, symbol definitions, and web and print layouts as XML documents in the Resource Database. These XML documents are referred to as resources. Resources are stored within the Resource Database in a directory-like hierarchy. Each stored resource has two fundamental parts: a header and content. The content is the XML document itself, such as the content of a file in the file system. The header is also an XML document that defines access permissions and metadata for the resource." (Working with Resources)
Use the MapGuide Studio, Site Explorer to view the Library Respository in the Resource/XML Database

How to backup the Resources Database

Step 0: confirm the path to the resources
- Login to MapGuide Site Administrator (http://localhost:8008/mapguide/mapadmin/login.php)
- on the left hand frame, under Manage Servers, click Configure Services
- Under the Resource Service heading, note the path for
  - Library data file folder
  - Library repository folder
  - Session data file folder
  - Session repository folder
  - Site repository folder
- Installation default is to put all these folders under the C:/Program Files/MapGuideOpenSource2.0/Server/Repositories directory
Step 1: Stop the MapGuide Server Service (Use Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Services -> MapGuide Server v2.0)
Step 2: copy/backup or paste/restore the C:/Program Files/MapGuideOpenSource2.0/Server/Repositories directory
- Change the directory if different from Step 0
Step 3: Start the MapGuide Server Service (Use Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Services -> MapGuide Server v2.0)
Notes
- This will overwrite any changes to the User accounts as well
- This will backup/restore the Session Repository/Storage Container, which is questionable, since I cannot think of a real benefit in saving the browsing activities of the MapGuide client.
- This will backup/restore the Library Repository/Storage Container
- This will backup/restore the Resource Data/Data Files (e.g. shp, sdf, ...)

How to Link External Data to MapGuide

Resource Identifier (a.k.a. ResourceId)
- used to access resources on the MapGuide Server
- Repository/Path/Name/Type
- Library://Samples/Sheboygan/Maps/Sheboygan.MapDefinition
- Repository = Library or Session
- Path = //Samples/Sheboygan/Maps
- Name = Sheboygan

MapGuide Feature Source
- A feature source identifier describes a complete path in the repository, e.g. Library://Samples/Sheboygan/Data/RoadCenterLines.FeatureSource
- A feature source can contain a feature class
- To set a feature source, visit http://localhost:8008/mapguide/mapagent/index.html
  - Services API (top left frame), click Resources
  - click SetResource (bottom left frame)
  - create an XML document on the server (e.g. C:\gisdata\hoa\HOAFeatureSourceDoc.xml)

How to uninstall and reinstall MapGuide

Uninstall MapGuide Web Services
- Control Panel -> Add or Remove Programs
- Will be prompted to restart the server
Uninstall MapGuide Server
Check to see all MapGuide Services (ApacheMapGuide, MapGuide Enterprise 2009 Server and/or MapGuide Server v2.0) are removed or uninstalled
- Use Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Services
- If the services are NOT removed, try using the SC command. Example: sc \\JeffServer delete MapGuideServer2009
Reboot the Server
- Might be able to skip this step. I had troubles getting an expired trial version of MapGuide Enterprise 2009 to completely uninstalled. So, when I installed MapGuide Open Source the Site Administrator was still pointing to the expired MapGuide Enterprise and thus I wasn't able to login. Getting the "Authentication failed. Please enter a valid username and password" error message.
Install MapGuide Server
Install MapGuide Web Services
- Bundled Configuration to install Apache and PHP
- Web Server Port Number: 8008 and Development Environment: PHP. If using Java, then Tomcat will be installed
- Enter the MapGuide Server site IP address
  - Recommend using the default localhost of 127.0.0.1
  - For security reasons, you never want to enter a WAN IP address here. The preferred method to login to the MapGuide Site Administrator
    - Option 1: using MapGuide Studio: Tools -> Site Administrator
    - Option 2: using remote desktop (mstsc /console for WinXP sp2 or mstsc /admin for WinXP sp3 and later) to connect to the Windows Server then just use http://localhost:8008/mapguide/mapadmin/login.php
  - Enter the LAN IP address if configuring MapGuide to run on more than one server.
- Typical Install will install API Documentation, Developer's Guide and WebStudio. Example path C:\Program Files\MapGuideOpenSource2.0\WebServerExtensions\www\webstudio\
Test if Apache Web Server is installed correctly
- visit http://127.0.0.1:8008/ or http://www.hostmapguide.com:8008/ and should get a page which says "It works!"
Test if PHP is installed correctly
- Using a text editor, create C:\Program Files\MapGuideOpenSource2.0\WebServerExtensions\www\phptest.php to include the following

- Using a web browser, open http://127.0.0.1:8008/phptest.php or http://localhost:8008/phptest.php or http://www.hostmapguide.com:8008/phptest.php
- Should look something like this
Test if you can logon to MapGuide Site Administrator
- Enterprise: http://localhost:8008/mapguide2009/mapadmin/login.php
- Open Source: http://localhost:8008/mapguide/mapadmin/login.php
- Default User ID: Administrator
- Default Password: admin
Test if you can connect to the MapGuide Server using MapGuide Studio

If getting an error Cannot establish connection see MapGuide Ticket 454 and Nabble website MGOS2.0.2 bundled installation won't support php on IIS6
- Edit the C:\Program Files\MapGuideOpenSource2.0\WebServerExtensions\Php\PHP.ini with a text editor.
- Obtain the the .dll from Jason Birch website ( php_MapGuideApiEnvConfig.dll) and place in the following directory (C:\Program Files\MapGuideOpenSource2.0\WebServerExtensions\Php\ext\php_MapGuideApiEnvConfig.dll)
- Tried restarting the ApacheMapGuide and MapGuide Server v2.0 services, but this didn't solve the problem. Tried rebooting the server, still unable to login to the Site Administrator.
- Tried uninstalling and reinstalling the WebExtensions as suggested by Andy Morsell and it worked fine. Well, it works sometimes I'm now having troubles starting the MapGuide Server Service if I edit the C:\Program Files\MapGuideOpenSource2.0\Server\Bin\serverconfig.ini
I think to change the IP address of the server, you need to edit the C:\Program Files\MapGuideOpenSource2.0\Server\Bin\serverconfig.ini file and the C:\Program Files\MapGuideOpenSource2.0\WebServerExtensions\www\webconfig.ini (see MapGuide Ticket #659)
- webconfig.ini, under SiteConnectionProperties, change IpAddress to the WAN IP Address (66.116.107.3)
- serverconfig.ini, under SiteConnectionProperties, change IpAddress to the WAN IP Address (66.116.107.3)
- serverconfig.ini, under GeneralProperties, change MachineIp to the WAN IP Address (66.116.107.3)
- Then when I attempt to connect to the Site Administrator, I get the following fatal error

Running MapGuide on Amazon's Elastic Computing Cloud (EC2)

- EC2 Getting Started Guide
- Amazon Public Images - Windows Server 2003 R2 Enterprise (32 bit) AMI ID: ami-be3cd8d7
Preinstall setup on Windows
- set JAVA_HOME="C:\Program Files\Java\jre6"
- set EC2_HOME=C:\EC2\ec2-api-tools-1.3-26369
Install an Instance
- ec2-run-instances ami-be3cd8d7 -k gsg-keypair
Test if Instance is Running
- ec2-describe-instances i-6c09b805
Instance Password
- ec2-get-password -k c:\ec2\id_rsa-gsg-keypair i-6c09b808 will return the Server and Remote Desktop password NIBRZY7EI1d (Normal). Username is Administrator. Instance is i-6c09b808.
Opening a port
- Windows Command Prompt: ec2-authorize default -p 8008 will open the default MapGuide port to the Internet
- ec2-authorize default -p 3389 -s 67.77.42.39/32 will open the Windows Remote Desktop firewall port only to my local computer (WAN IP Address 67.77.42.39)

- FQDN is ec2-75-101-182-98.compute-1.amazonaws.com use this URL for Remote Desktop
Closing a port
- ec2-revoke default -p 8080
- ec2-describe-group default use this to ensure that your revoke command did what you intended it to do.
Setup an Elastic IP Address
- ec2-allocate-address
- ec2-associate-address -i i-6c09b805 75.101.134.236
- When you associate an instance to an IP address, then default address is removed (ec2-75-101-182-98.compute-1.amazonaws.com)

Testing install of MapGuide
- http://ec2-75-101-182-98.compute-1.amazonaws.com:8008/phptest.php
