"My mother's dream was that one of her sons would become a footballer.
She was the kind of mother who would take out a little money so I could
go and train at the club.... I remembered what my mother had done for me
so that I could be a football player....And the first teammate to come
over was Checko Batista and with Checho's beard it was like having Jesus
in front of me. I cried when he said, 'Now we are champions of the
world.' In those happy moments you don't have a mirror, but you see joy
in other people's faces. That is your mirror."
(ESPN's I Scored a Goal in the World Cup)

how successful you might be." Margaret Thatcher (see Imprimis June 2008

Benjamin Franklin
Infallible Rule
"While gambling at checkers with some shipmates, he formulated an
'infallible rule,' which was that 'if two persons equal in judgment play
for a considerable sum, he that loves money most shall lose; his
anxiety for the success of the game confounds him.' The rule, he decided,
applied to other battles; a person who is too fearful will end up
performing defensively and thus fail to seize offensive advantages."

In fact the music Mozart wrote for the "instrument that I can't stand" is beautiful, idiomatic
and, of course, close to James Galway's heart. Indeed, the composer has been Galway's constant companion since
childhood: "I had a 78rpm record of the flautist John Amadio playing the Rondo from his Flute
Concerto K. 313. Because he had to fit it on one side of the 78, Amadio played like the wind,
and he became my role model. I still play the concerto today of course, and each time you play
a piece by Mozart, you discover something new. It puts you to the test every time." (
