Research - Jeffrey Jablonski, Ph.D.
My scholarly work has been in the areas of professional/technical communication, writing program administration, and writing across the curriculum (WAC). Since joining the English Department in August 2000, most of my research has been related to my work directing the professional writing program. For instance, my peer-reviewed article "Seeing Technical Communication from a Career Perspective" grew out of my interest in understanding the career competencies of technical writers and how broader career trends might affect our certificate curriculum. This article was nominated in 2006 for the NCTE Award for Best Article in the Theory or Philosophy of Technical Communication.
Another research interest of mine is writing program assessment. A forthcoming book chapter, "Assessing Technical Writing Programs Using Technology as a Site of Praxis" focuses on my and my colleague Ed Nagelhout's efforts to develop a computer-networked service course curriculum. Specifically, the article discusses our collaborative approach to developing a hybrid online textbook/course management environment.
My book fouses on writing across the curriculum (WAC). Based on my dissertation, it is titled Academic Writing Consulting and WAC: Methods and Models for Guiding Cross-Curricular Literacy Work (Hampton Press, 2006). The book addresses the theoretical and practical issues that arise as writing specialists translate their disciplinary knowledge to others. I have applied this work in numerous projects and collaborations across UNLV.
I am also the lead author of the second edition of the online textbook Business and Technical Writing WebCOM (Kendall/Hunt, 2003). (I co-authored the first edition with Ed Nagelhout. There are also numerous contributions from current and former graduate students and instructors.)
I have delivered numerous papers at national and regional conferences and was invited to serve as the book review editor for the Journal of Business and Technical Communication, one of my field's top journals.
