Biography - Jeffrey Jablonski, Ph.D.

I received my Ph.D. in rhetoric and composition, a subfield of English studies, from Purdue University in 2000. Purdue has one of the top graduate programs in this specialization, which involves the study of academic and professional/technical writing.

I joined the UNLV English department in fall 2000. Within a year I was directing both the Professional Writing Certificate and Business and Technical Writing programs. I co-developed the curriculum (with Prof. Nagelhout) and supervised the staff of part-time instructors and graduate students who teach the over 50 sections annually of business and technical writing courses. We developed an innovative online curriculum using a hybrid online textbook/course management system called Business and Technical Writing WebCOM (Kendall/Hunt, 2003).

I currently serve in the Vice Provost for Academic Affair's office as Assistant Director of General Education. My primary duties are to chair the Writing Across the Curriculum Committee and assist with the General Education Director's curriculum planning and assessment activities. I also developed the General Education Writing Links program.

I teach undergraduate and graduate courses in composition theory, electronic documents and publications, and business and technical Writing. In fall 2007, I am teaching a writing link with Prof. Dove in the philosophy department. In 2005, I was the English department's nominee for the Morris Award for Excellence in Teaching.

My research interests include professional/technical writing, writing across the curriculum (WAC), and writing program administration. My book Academic Writing Consulting and WAC: Methods and Models for Guiding Cross-Curricular Literacy Work (Hampton Press, 2006) examines how writing specialists collaborate with non-writing specialists to promote cross-curricular literacy in academic contexts. My article, "Seeing Technical Communication from a Career Perspective," was nominated for the NCTE Best Article in the Theory or Philosophy of Technical Communication in 2006. I am also the book review editor for the Journal of Business and Technical Communication.

I have conducted consulting and training for organizations such as Bechtel Nevada, Stoller-Navarro, the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, and the UNLV College of Business MBA Program. I was also an expert witness in a user manual warnings case.

I grew up in a suburb of Buffalo, NY. I earned bachelor's degrees in English and political science, and a master's degree in English from State University of New York College at Buffalo.
