 Comparative analyses of omptin proteases

Omptins are proteases located in the outer membrane of several gram-negative bacteria. Bacteria that express omptin proteases frequently associate with plant or animal cells, either as symbionts or as pathogens. Conservation of the omptin proteases in these bacterial groups suggests that omptins may play important roles in bacterial/host interactions. Using a comparative approach, we aim to determine whether the Shigella omptin shares functionality with other members of the omptin family.
