Orientation to Evolve Resources for Nursing Students

UNLV SON: Student Resources: Useful Links

The UNLV School of Nursing (SON) has developed this site to assist nursing students in their academic achievement. Information and resources will be added from time to time. You may use all the information and resources independently or with the assistance of your Faculty Advisor.

Faculty Advisors

Each student is assigned a Faculty Advisor (FA )at the beginning of their nursing program. This faculty member will provide guidance and support as the student progress through their program. Your FA is primarily interested in your academic success.

What will a faculty advisor do?

  • Review NET and ERI test results to provide guidance for individual academic growth.
  • Discuss academic challenges and provide referral to appropriate resources available on campus.
  • Be a friendly resource when uncertainty exists.
  • Review and recommend applications for graduation.

Students must meet with their FA at least once per semester. The FA may meet with students in a group or individually. Students need to maintain an educational portfolio which they will present at the time of their FA advisement meetings.

Student Portfolios

Students must maintain a portfolio of their entrance exams and standardized test reports. Each students portfolio should also include any additional documents which demonstrate their academic achievements. This may include papers, concept maps, patient education materials, care plans, or any other items which demonstrates their achievement in the nursing program.

In addition clinical evaluations are completed and stored electronically throughout the program. Students may access these evaluations when desired and may print or save copies electronically for their reference or inclusion in their portfolio.

Study Skills Lead to Success

Many nursing students are challenged by the depth and volume of material that is covered in the nursing program. Efficient and effective study skills are essential to success in nursing courses. There are many resources available on campus, and the SON has selected additional resources which have been shown to facilitate student success.

Students will find it helpful to complete the online orientation to the Evolve resources including e-texts, HESI testing, and test remediation tools which are available at https://evolve.elsevier.com/orientation/default.htm.

Additional study skill resources are available in the shaded area to the left. We encourage you to use as many of them as are useful to you.

Learning Style Preferences

Most students have a learning style preference. It is important to know what your preference is, as you will be exposed to several different teaching methods in the nursing program. The methods you may be exposed to include, lecture, discussion, problem based learning, concept mapping, socratic reasoning, and other models.

Regardless of the match between learning style preference and teaching method, all students can learn. If you find a teaching method is not facilitating your learning as well as you would like, consider requesting a meeting with your instructor or faculty advisor to assist you in developing strategies which will enhance your learning experience. Regardless of the learning preference, all students are able to adapt and learn new styles.
