Paraphrasing
Professional writing is a synthesis of knowledge from multiple sources into the authors unique thought. Quotations should only be used sparingly and when essential to make a point or if the thought can not be paraphrased. Over use of quotations is distracting to the reader and tends to result in a less than effective message. Paraphrasing is used to relay the essence of what another person has said in a manner that is relevant to the focus of the subject you are writing about. When paraphrasing, the sources used must be cited and referenced just as you would reference a quotation. The following links from OWL are specific to paraphrasing.
