Theses and dissertations in Exercise Physiology intimately involve the major professor and thesis director since the student is usually working on a phases of the professor's research. The idea, research design, methodology, data collection are shared by both the student and the professor. Although the student's name always appears first on the presented or published work, the professor is intimately and extensively involved in all phases of the study and usually assumes the major responsibility for writing and publishing the paper.

Since my arrival in Las Vegas in 1976 I have conducted a longitudinal study on the effect of daily progressive exercise on coronary risk factors in adult men and women and the effect of exercise on aging. One hundred adult men for the business community of Las Vegas and the University report to the university every day at noon to exercise in a class under supervision. Thirty-five women similarly report each day at 11:00 am to do a similar program.
These 135 subjects are assessed for percent body fat, physical work capacity, strength and flexibility, serum lipids (including HDL-C, LDL-C, VLDL-C, Triglycerides, Apoprotein A & B), Blood pressure and electrocardiographic measures.
A total of 925 men and 175 women have participated for at least one year in the experimental program since its inception. Twenty men and six women have been in the program for 18 years or more.
In addition to studying the effects of daily exercise on the above parameters, the study also determines the effect of daily exercise on the aging process.
The data resulting from this research will strongly influence the beliefs and health practices of aging Americans regarding the beneficial effects of prudent exercise on both coronary heart disease and aging.
