Student Athlete Award of Merit – (Track & Field – pole vault) 2000 RESEARCH & PUBLICATIONS Advancing Cognition in Architecture Fall 2004 – May 06 A thesis and experiments using music cognition as an exemplary thought process for the rethinking of architecture ABSTRACT: The interconnectivities and disparities observed between music and architecture have prompted this proposition; [architectural] design processes that borrow principles from music composition will enable the performative aspects of the built environment to become a more expressive and intensive investigation (rehearsal) of the concepts used in their creation. It is this process of rehearsing (to hear anew) or re-interpreting that this thesis attempts to illustrate as the mechanism which enables an elevated understanding of and appreciation for a particular musical or architectural composition.
·
Thesis Committee: Arthur Ovaska (chair), Carol Krumhansl, Jonathan Ochshorn, and Werner Goehner
·
Successfully defended the thesis May 1, 2006 with an hour-long multi-media presentation and hour-discussion.
