My Favorite Open-Source, Free, or Almost Free Software Tools

Software for both work and play!
For anyone who would like to try their hand at editing audio files, Audacity needs to be your first stop! This is open-source software (free to everyone) and works well. Download the LAME encoder, too, so you can create MP3 files.
Avid is the standard by which all other video editing software is measured. Avid is extremely powerful and can be daunting, but this link will take you to a slimmed-down, no-cost version called FreeDV so you can see what the fuss is all about.
Mozilla Thunderbird is an open-source email client that works really well for anyone who wishes to bypass the often-buggy Microsoft Outlook. While Thunderbird doesn't have some of the more glitzy features of Outlook, it doesn't have many of the issues that plague Outlook, either.
Mozilla Firefox is an open-source web browser with terrific features (like tabbed windows) that Internet Explorer is just now starting to have. Firefox has rapidly become the browser of choice for people who know a little something about the web, and who are using the Windows OS (operating system).
Okay...this one isn't free...but it's an essential on my desktop as well as anyone to whom I've introduced it. It's an email "pre-scanner" called Mailwasher. Mailwasher reads emails from all your accounts (pop3, webmail, whatever) and lets you discard spam and anything else before you open it in your email client. It's not expensive!
From the folks at Google comes GMail...a webmail client that will give you a relatively HUGE amount of online storage at no cost! This is a no-brainer, even though Google may actually take over the world with offerings as attractive as this!
