  • Mandatory Attendance at Lectures
Attendance of lectures is mandatory; attendeance will be taken each class using the iClicker, so be sure to bring your iClicker to each class. If you have special needs concerning the lecture, you should notify your Section Leader at the first meeting of your Discussion Section.

  • You should arrive for each lecture on time (before 10am) and be prepared to stay until the end (11:15). If you are unable to attend a lecture due to personal or medical emergency, please inform your Section Leader as soon as you know you will not be able to attend. If you will have to arrive late or leave early, you should speak with your Section Leader in advance. If you arrive late or need to leave early due to an unforeseen urgency , please speak with your Section Leader (who will be sitting by the door) immediately upon arrival or departure. Missed lectures, tardy arrivals or early departures that are not due to personal or medical emergencies will result in a reduction of your class participation grade.

  • During the lecture, you should pay close attention, take careful notes, ask questions at appropriate times, and generally behave in a fashion appropriate for a university. At each class meeting, I will invite questions and comments at the beginning of each lecture, approximately every 20 minutes during the lecture, and at the end of the lecture. Otherwise, out of respect to your fellow students and your instructor, you are expected to maintain an appropriate classroom demeanor, which means you are paying attention, taking notes and not speaking with others.

  • Before the lecture begins, you should turn off your cell phone and any other electronic device that is not being used for classroom purposes. Cell phones and other devices must be off at all times during each lecture.

  • If at any time you violate these procedures, you will receive a warning that your behavior is disruptive. Upon a second violation, you will be asked to leave the classroom for the rest of the day. If you are asked to leave the classroom for disruptive behavior on two occasions during the semester, you will be administratively withdrawn from the course and your transcript will reflect that you have failed the course.

  • Five Quizzes (10%)
There will be five (5) quizzes conducted during the lecture meetings (approximately every other Tuesday). Each quiz will cover material from the previous two weeks. The quizzes will be administered using the iClicker. The quizzes, taken together, will comprise 10% of your semester grade , based on the average of your five quiz scores (on a 1 - 10 scale). There will be no make-up quizzes unless you have notified your Section Leader that you will not be able to attend in advance of the quiz . If there is a medical or personal emergency on the day of the quiz, please notify the Section Leader as soon as you know you will not be able to attend class.

  • Regular Attendance and Participation in Discussion at Sections (20%)
To prepare for your section discussions, you should bring your lecture notes, the notes you have prepared on your readings, and at least 3 questions to turn in , about material covered in the lecture or readings that week. Your Section Leader will assign you a grade of 0 – 20 based on your attendance and your effort to participate in the discussions; this will account for 20% of your semester grade . If you will not be able to attend your Section meeting on a given week, you must notify your Section Leader in advance . If there is a medical or personal emergency on the day of your Section meeting, please notify the Section Leader (via email or phone) as soon as you know you will not be able to attend class.

  • Three Tests (50%)
Two Midterm Exams and one Final Exam. Both midterms will be one hour and will consist of a combination of multiple choice, fill in the blank and short answer questions. The final exam will be two hours and consist of the same format. Each midterm will account for 15% of your semester grade, and the final exam will account for 20% of your final grade. There will be no make-up exams unless you have notified your Section Leader that you will not be able to attend in advance of the test . If there is a medical or personal emergency on the day of the test, please notify the Section Leader (via email or phone) as soon as you know you will not be able to attend.

  • One 3 - 5 page paper (20%)
The paper is based on a topic to be distributed in class, on the date specified on the syllabus. You will turn in a first draft to your Section Leader on the date specified on the syllabus, who will provide commentary and return it to you the following week. You will then turn in a revised, final draft to your Section Leader on the date specified on the syllabus. This paper will account for 20% of your semester grade . Late papers will be graded down one half letter grade (ie, 1 point) per day of lateness, unless you requested and been granted an extension by your Section Leader in advance.
