What kind of machine is the web server running on?

The web server is running on a Sun Microsystems Sun Fire V440 server.

What operating system are you using?

The operating system is Solaris 10 (UNIX).

What web server software are you running?

The web server software is Apache. We also run an Apache-SSL server for users who need to set up secure pages. See our secure server page for details.

What is the fully qualified domain name?

http://faculty.unlv.edu

What is the hostname?

You may use faculty.unlv.edu as the hostname when logging into your account.

What is my quota?

We do not impose quotas at this time. People who abuse this privilege, such as to store large numbers of audio or video files or to back up their hard drives, will be warned to remove the files. Failure to do so will result in removal of the files and closure of the account.

Are FrontPage extensions supported on the web server?

No, FrontPage extensions are not supported. You can install a cgi script to handle your needs or use one of the pre-installed scripts already available.

Which cgi scripts do you have pre-installed?

We have form handling, counter, and survey/quiz building cgi scripts pre-installed. For information on using these scripts, follow the links above.

Can I install my own cgi scripts?

Yes, cgi access is available. See our cgi information page for details.

Does the web server support server-side includes?

Yes, you can use server-side includes on your web pages. See our SSI page for details.

Which FTP program should I use?

You may use any Secure FTP application. Software recommendations are listed on the right sidebar of this page. For other software options, visit download.com or tucows.com.

Which HTML authoring program should I use?

Some of the more popular applications used on campus include Macromedia DreamWeaver, Adove GoLive, Netscape Communicator, and Microsoft FrontPage. We strongly recommend Dreamweaver MX 2004. This version supports secure FTP connections, which are required to connect to the web server. If you need an image editing or illustration application, the Macromedia Studio MX 2004 bundle includes Dreamweaver, Fireworks, Flash, and Freehand. Both Dreamweaver and the Studio bundle are available through Campus Computing Services. For more information, visit http://ccs.unlv.edu/ccs/SoftwareLicense/Macromedia.asp.

You can also create web pages using a text editor such as NotePad or SimpleText or download a shareware program from such sites as www.tucows.com or download.com. Some applications, including Microsoft Word, Microsoft PowerPoint, and Adobe PageMaker, will export documents in web-ready format. Refer to your software application's documentation for information about available features.

The Teaching and Learning Center provides support on using Dreamweaver to create web page. The Office of Information Technology provides account management support.
