Discontinuation of EventHandler Accounts

A note about EventHandler: The application is a legacy application originally created for online contests. In support of UNLV's evolution as a research university, a new application dedicated to surveys has been implemented. All new account requests for EventHandler will be automatically turned into account for SurveyTool. Existing EventHandler account holders will continue to be supported on EventHandler but are encouraged to begin transitioning to SurveyTool. While there is no definite end date in sight for EventHandler, we believe that SurveyTool is a superior application for faculty and staff.

Getting Started

EventHandler is a legacy software application for creating web surveys, quizzes, polls, and contests.

The following instructions describe how to use some of the basic features in EventHandler. The instructions will walk you through such tasks as logging in, creating and editing an event, uploading files, viewing totals, and editing a template. Many other features, which are not documented here, are also available.

To get the most out of this application, please read through the various administration screens as you create your event items. As you become more comfortable with the program, feel free to experiment with the options available under the various pull-down menus.

TIP: For the purposes of these instructions, the word "event" will be used to refer to the surveys, polls, quizzes, and contests you create with this application.

Logging into EventHandler

REGISTERED USERS: Click the Login Now button. At the login screen, enter your user id and password. Click the Save Login box if you'd like your web browser to remember your login and password.

NEW USERS: Send an e-mail to kody.kearns@unlv.edu to request a user ID and password.

Creating a Survey, Quiz, Poll, or Contest

1. Under the User Admin Navigation pull-down menu, choose Create Event.

3. Fill in the Title and Filename text boxes.

4. Click Create New Event.

5. You will see a screen that says "Event Created." Choose the click here link to begin setting up your event.

6. In the first section, the following items are very important:

  • Public Link: This is the link you'll give to the public to access your event.
  • Notes: The notes will tell you about incorrect settings or settings that are missing, incorrect, or incomplete.

7. Proceed down the page to the section under Event Settings & Variables.

8. Read each section and complete information as appropriate. Many sections may be skipped depending upon the type of event you are creating. You will always be able to return to this screen, so don't worry if you're not sure how to complete an item. Just skip the item or take your best guess and see what happens.

9. Click the Set Event Variables button when you're finished choosing your preliminary settings. This step also creates the input boxes for your form.

10. You will see a screen that says Update Complete. Choose the Click here link to return to the Event Variables screen. Scroll to the bottom of the page to enter your questions. Click the Set Event Variables button to save your changes.

Editing an Existing Event

1. If this is a new session, log into EventHandler.

2. Under Event Administration, choose Event Settings.

3. Depending on the autostart and autoexpire dates you set, your event will appear under either Current, Coming, or Previous. Choose your event and click Modify Event.

4. Edit your settings and then click Set Event Variables to save.

5. From the Update Complete screen, choose the Click here link. Select the public link to view the changes to your document.

Changing Background and Text Colors

1. Log into EventHandler.

2. Go to Event Navigation and choose Settings.

3. Scroll down to Formatting Settings. Enter hexadecimal color codes (preceded by the # sign). To see a list of color codes, go to http://www.fredtek.com/tech/webdev/colors.htm.

4. Click Set Event Variables to save your color settings.

Editing Templates

1. If this is a new session, log into EventHandler.

2. Under Event Administration, choose Edit Templates. Note: Do not edit the templates unless you have a strong knowledge of HTML. Also, this line

<p>$REPLACE</p>

must appear in the template or your questions won't be displayed.

3. Make your changes and click Modify Template.

Viewing the Results/Totals

1. If this is a new session, log into EventHandler.

2. Under Event Administration, choose Event Options.

3. Click Show Totals to view the current totals for all submissions.

Deleting All Entries at Once

This option is useful for removing practice entries or removing results after final survey results have been compiled.

1. Log into EventHandler.

2. Under Event Administration, choose Event Options.

3. Click the Clear Entries and Answers radio button. Then click the Submit button to remove ALL entries at once.

Deleting Individual Entries

1. Log into EventHandler.

2. Under Event Administration, choose Event Options.

3. Click the View All Entries radio button, and then click the Submit button. A new web page will be displayed showing your entries.

4. Click Delete w/ Backup to save the entry to a file. Keep in mind that you'll have to contact the Somebody should you need to have the file recovered. Click Delete w/o Backup to completely remove the entry (preferred method as this reduces unnecessary waste of disk space).

Uploading Files

EventHandler automatically displays event totals after someone completes your form. If you'd prefer to have the script return a static web page, such as a thank you page, you'll need to do the following:

1. Create the web page using your favorite text or HTML editor.

2. Log into EventHandler.

3. Under Event Administration, choose Upload File. Enter the location of the file or choose Browse to scan through your hard drive. Once you've found your file, click Upload File.

4. The next screen will show you the URL of the file you've just uploaded. Make a note of this. It should be something like this:

http://faculty.unlv.edu/EventHandler/users/
yourUserID/filename.html

5. Under Event Administration, choose Event Settings.

6. Select your event item and click Modify Event.

7. Scroll down to the Static Pages section. Under Correct Redirect URL, enter the URL of the file you just uploaded.

8. Click Set Event Variables to save your changes.

Logging Out

EventHandler does not provide a logout screen. To quit the application, go to another URL or close your browser window.
