PHILOSOPHY OF EDUCATION STATEMENT
An effective teacher is a visionary. Where others may see hurdles and obstacles to overcome, as a teacher, I see opportunities and challenges. At the heart of my teaching philosophy is my belief that education is a life-long pursuit. An engaged and active educator continues to be curious about the educational process, the evolving environment, and the needs of all students. With humility, the teacher must recognize the limits of personal knowledge and constantly seek coaching from experts in one’s personal and professional life.
An effective teacher is a communicator. With a clear vision, he or she articulates objectives so that students clearly understand the purpose and meaning of the assignment, and the steps to be taken to achieve the goal. I try to develop my students’ understanding and awareness of the tools necessary for attaining the craft and art of teaching.
An effective teacher is a motivator. Coming from the distinction of empowerment, a teacher sees more potential in the student than the student may see. A teacher becomes the welcoming mirror in which the individual sees personal growth.
An effective teacher is consistent. With unwavering determination, he or she resists external distractions and understands that tenacity is integral to the educational process, particularly in the face of contrary circumstances. Course corrections are undertaken with integrity of purpose and compassion to the individual student.
The teacher’s role is to engage students in the process of discovery that promotes life-long learning. Through directed teaching, undergraduate students must develop a foundation of knowledge and the ability to apply this knowledge in a changing environment. As a trusted member of a teaching community, I believe it is important to foster an environment of respect for the individual and the group and to contribute to an academic atmosphere of free and open exchange of ideas by maintaining the spirit of inquisitiveness tempered by an awareness of individuals’ needs.
An effective teacher is committed to service and recognizes that the highest achievements in life come from service to others.
