Environment & Development

(ENV 205)

The Course:

The course is designed to introduce students to the impacts of environmental issues in developing countries.  Students will become familiar with current and historical environmental issues globally – with special focus on the interrelatedness of environmental problems, cultural and social issues, and economic issues facing both individuals and communities at large.  Exploration of current methodologies for dealing with these issues and possible future solutions will be an ongoing goal for students in this course.

Goals:

§    To explore the differences between environmental concerns in developed and developing countries;

§    To understand interactions between development, culture, and the exploitation of natural resources;

§    To recognize interactions between development, culture, and human and ecological health;

§    To evaluate the role of developed countries in promoting appropriate international environmental laws and policies;

§    To identify approaches for dealing with environmental issues facing developing countries.

Message from Instructor:

I see it as my duty to expose students to as many developmentally-related environmental issues as possible.  Instead of filling students with abstract facts and ideas, it is my role (and my pleasure) to peak your interest and help you gain some basic understanding of environmental issues that are facing developing countries and our role as a developed country in these issues.  In addition, the asynchronous delivery of this online course is designed to allow students to enroll who might otherwise be prohibited from taking this class in a traditional classroom-based section.
