David M. Hassenzahl is an internationally recognized expert on risk analysis for societal decision-making, with public and private sector experience. His research focuses on the management and interpretation of uncertainty. His contributions include numerous publications, among them the influential Princeton University Press book Should We Risk It. He Chairs the Society for Risk Analysis Education Committee, and is President-Elect of the Risk Assessment and Policy Association. He has received the UNLV Foundation Distinguished Teaching Award, and both the Outstanding Researcher and Outstanding Teacher Awards from the Greenspun College of Urban Affairs. |

Air Quality Inspector, Bay Area Air Quality Management District, San Francisco Bay Area, California. Primary responsibility was to enforce compliance with air quality rules and regulations in the Bay Area. Principally assigned to the group inspecting oil refineries in central and western Contra Costa County. Duties included on site inspections and record review, response to citizen complaints, communication between citizens and the refineries, and regulation review and development. Other duties included similar activity at other air emission sources (public, industrial and residential).
1990-1991
Environmental Engineer, Gaylord Container Corporation, Antioch, CA. Responsible for all aspects of environmental compliance for Gaylord's California Mill, a virgin fiber and recycled corrugated cardboard pulp and paper mill. Principal duty was to maintain compliance with all federal, state and local requirements for air, water, and hazardous waste emissions. Major projects included establishing and managing a Citizen Advisory Panel to provide oversight on areas of community concern, creating Gaylord's Air Toxics Inventory and Risk report (California AB 2588), creating Gaylord's Risk Management and Prevention Program (California AB 2188), and negotiating permits with the Bay Area Air Quality Management District and the Central Valley Water Resources Control Board.
