Analysis
There are many progressive analysts & writers who have focused on the
Middle East over the years, beginning with:
Eqbal Ahmad. Until his death in 1999, Eqbal Ahmad was a leading
writer, thinker and anti-war activist whose reflections on both U.S. policy
and politics and culture in South Asia and the Middle East are especially
relevant now.
Noam Chomsky. His
writings are voluminous. The Fateful Triangle is his most
significant work on United States policy towards Israel and the
Palestinians. His writings are archived online by Z Magazine.
Edward Said. Palestinian
intellectual and writer, author of the classic works The Question of
Palestine, Orientalism, and many more.
Two left-of-center journals for ongoing
coverage are:
Middle East International
(British bi-weekly)
MERIP Reports published by the
Middle East Research and Information Project, which also publishes good
primers on various topics

Working Assets has provided the following information on ways
we can help provide relief assistance as well as support efforts to
make progress towards peace, justice and reconciliation in the Middle
East. The material comes directly from the Shop for Change
newsletter (I hope I haven't violated any copyright restrictions). I
haven't hyperlinked the sites, so just cut and past the addresses into
your browser address bar.

Working Assets is providing up to $1 million in matching funds to
match contributions to nonprofit organizations on our sister site
http://www.GiveForChange.com.
Many organizations are collecting funds for use in supporting the
relief efforts now going on and in assisting the victims in rebuilding
their lives. The need is so new that there is little detail on
precisely how the funds will be used. Here are a few organizations
which have mobilized already:
The Tides 9/11 Fund - Supporting immediate relief efforts as well as
immediate and long-term efforts to promote a just and peaceful
response to this crisis.

The New York Firefighters 9-11 Relief Fund - Supplying assistance to
the families of firefighters who died in the line of duty.

assistance to local agencies and nonprofits.

Middle East Peace, Justice and Reconciliation
Some of our members have asked us for suggestions of groups that are
working for peace, justice and reconciliation in the Middle East.
Recognizing that nobody has yet claimed responsibility for the
terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, these seven groups all do
important work that deserves your consideration. Please note that all
work in this area is risky and controversial. All are working on long
term efforts that hold some promise. Working Assets does not
specifically endorse the precise approach of each of the
groups--indeed, some are in conflict with each other. May peace and
compassion be our watchwords in the difficult days, weeks and months
ahead.
