Background and General Information

  • What is the Seventh Grade Grant?
This s a Mathematics partnership 7th Grade Grant for all CCSD middle school teachers.
  • Who can take advantage of this opportunity, and when?
Starting Summer 2004 through Summer 2006, this grant will provide training for all CCSD middle school mathematics teachers.
  • What does the grant provide?
    - A 16 hour summer mathematics workshop
    - Three 8 hour regionally centered professional development seminars (1 each each trimester)
    - Financial support for 9 semester hours (3 classes, see below) of university content courses connected to the Nevada math standards and Praxis II exam.
  • What is the objective of the grant?
Our objective is to see an increase in achievement in middle school mathematics.
  • How will this grant benefit teachers?
Teachers will benefit by receiving additional content knowledge, pedagogical strategies, and an increased confidence when teaching number sense, geometry, measurements and data analysis standards.
  • What are the specifics of achieving Highly Qualified Teacher status?
Teachers who complete the program will acquire Highly Qualified Teacher status under the HOUSSE requirements. Specifically this means if you have 3 years of  verified full time teaching experience in middle school math by 2005-2006 and don't have a master's or have not passed the Praxis exam, you can take150 hrs of professional development. This grant will provide you with 150 hrs if you take all 3 UNLV courses and complete all the seminars and workshop training.
  • What if I don't qualify for the HOUSSE option, can I still benifit from participating?
Yes!  January 13th the commission passed legislation stating that middle school teachers were now eligible to achieve Highly Qualified Teacher status when successfully passing the Middle School Mathematics (0069) Praxis II exam. This is a replacement of the Mathematics: Content Knowledge (0061) Praxis II exam previously required.  The 9 credits of UNLV math courses are approved for salary advancement and are designed to assist you in raising your mathematics content knowledge.
  • What happens if I do not take all the courses?
You won't have all 150 hours to achieve HQT status.
  • What if I already have HQT status, can I still participate?
Yes!  Even if you are already HQT you can still participate in the grant professional development training.
  • What expenses should I expect as part of this?
You will have to pay for the UNLV classes up-front, they run about $95 per credit and each course is 3 credits.  Provided you are a 'grant participant' (meaning you also attend the workshops) you will be reimbursed upon successful completion of the course.  Your book will be provided for your use during the semester.  Depending on how much you like to walk (or not walk) you may want to buy a permit to park on the UNLV campus (see below).  You must provide your own travel to/from UNLV classes and workshops.
  • How do I sign up?
If you are interested in the UNLV courses contact Carryn Bellomo.  If you are interested in participating in the professional development seminars or workshops contact Tina Mika.
