STAT 391 (002) Applied Statistics for Biological Sciences


Topics Covered:  Elements of probability, types of biological data, sampling, graphical display of data, commonly used distributions, sampling distributions, point estimation, interval estimation, hypothesis testing, nonparametric  tests, categorical data analysis, introduction to regression and design of experiments.

 

Prerequisites:

MATH 127 or equivalent

Brigitte Baldi and David S.Moore, The Practice of Statistics in the Life Sciences

Computer Software:  The statistics package "R" will be used in this class.  This is an open-source software for both mac and pc that is widely adopted within academia, business, and government. I will have a running list of R commands that I will hand out with all quizzes and exams. You can download R at http://www.r-project.org.

 

Web-Campus:  All material for the course (lecture notes, a list of R commands, homework assignments and solutions) will be posted on web-campus.

 

Class Policies:  Class attendance is expected.  No late assignments, quizzes, or exams will be accepted.

                           20%   Exam I
                           20%   Exam II
                           40%  Comprehensive Final Exam (Tuesday December 8 2009, 6:00pm-8:00pm, CBC-C125)
