        Legal Publications and News Services:
         

      • The ABA Journal, the companion to the monthly magazine, provides a variety of information online, including selected articles and ABA Journal news.
      • The ALI Reporter, published by the American Law Institute, includes a message from the Institute's President, as well as the latest information about ALI projects, meetings, and members.
      • The Journal of Online Law (JOL) is an electronic publication of scholarly essays about law and online communications-law. JOL is not a law review per se; rather, JOL intends to concisely frame and explore the key legal issues arising from networked communication; speculate about future trends; and in general, try to bring "interested readers interesting reading" about the law of cyberspace.
      • Law Journal Extra! (LJX), updated daily, claims to be the "largest commercial web site for lawyers." LJX provides a variety of resources, including daily news updates.
      • The Labor Letter offers practical, usable information for employers on state and federal employment law developments including sexual harrassment, worker's compensation, the Americans with Disabilities Act, and more.
      • West's Legal News (WLN) provides legal and business professionals with topically focused legal intelligence that is prompt, interesting, full, and reliable. WLN is published Monday through Friday, except on holidays. What distinguishes WLN is the blending of journalistic principles with legal analysis, as well as its links to underlying documents archived on WESTLAW. Note that all online editors are licensed attorneys.

        Professional Legal Resources:
         

      • ABI World is the site of the American Bankruptcy Institute, the premier organization for the nation's leading insolvency professionals. ABI World contains, among other services, bankruptcy resources -- including court opinions and readings -- and legislative news.
      • Cal Law provides a daily briefing on law relevant to California, offering topical updates and analysis from major law firms (Briefing Papers); the latest court opinions from all appellate courts in California, as well the U.S. Supreme Court and Ninth Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals (the Daily Opinion Service); and daily summaries of California and national legal news (NewsRoundup).
      • Chinese Commercial Law offers one of the few online resources for Commercial Law of the People's Republic of China.
      • CyberLaw World Wide is an educational service, maintained by Jonathan Rosenoer, supported by attorneys across the United States. CyberLaw contains resources and links for legal issues regarding the Internet.
      • International Trade Law provides information and links related to international trade law.
      • InterNet Bankruptcy Library includes news and resources, including legislative and statistical information, for domestic and foreign bankruptcy issues.
      • The Legal Information Institute (LII) at Cornell Law School offers the LII's hypertext front-end to recent Supreme Court decisions (distributed on the day of decision under project Hermes) and its collection of historic decisions; the LII's collection of recent opinions of the New York Court of Appeals and the liibulletin-ny (which provides analysis of selected decisions); and the LII's hypertext version of the full U.S. Code and many other important legal documents. In addition, the LII holds an e-mail address directory of faculty and staff at U.S. law schools, and is host to the Cornell Law Review.
      • Oyez Oyez Oyez: A Supreme Court Resource: Oyez Oyez Oyez provides provide information about major constitutional cases heard and decided by the Supreme Court of the United States. In addition to details about the questions and opinions in these cases, Oyez provides, using Real Audio, digital recordings of the Court's proceedings.
      • Qui Tam: A Defense Perspective provides information for those pursuing qui tam actions ("who sues on behalf of the king as well as for himself"), the whistleblower provision of the Federal False Claims Act. The site includes statistics, The False Claims Act, Department Of Justice press releases, and related criminal statutes.
      • Sec Law.com offers an online guide to securities law, including dialy news stories, related Web sites, the "law and compliance center," and detailed arbitration information.
      • The Bankruptcy Lawfinder includes materials about case law, statutes, and regulations; federal government locations; and legal resources.
      • The Intellectual Property Information Mall links intellectual property resources maintained by the Franklin Pierce Law Center and others on the Internet. It is intended to offer "one stop shopping" for intellectual property professionals in academia, business and science, as well as for inventors and entrepreneurs.
      • The Qui Tam Information Center provides whistleblowers and attorneys with information to help in pursuing qui tam actions. Qui Tam ("who sues on behalf of the king as well as for himself") is a provision of the Federal Civil False Claims Act that allows a private citizen to file a suit in the name of the U.S. Government charging fraud by government contractors and other entities who receive or use government funds, and share in any money recovered.
      • The UCLA Online Institute for Cyberspace Law and Policy, which exists solely in "cyberspace," provides resources for academics, practitioners, students, and interested "netizens," regarding legal problems arising in cyberspace. The institute will soon begin "publishing" papers by academics, practitioners, students, and other members of the online community.
      • Thomson & Thomson, an authority in trademark and patent copyright searching, provides fee-based and free resources addressing copyright law.

        State and Federal Executive, Legislative, and Judicial Resources:
         

      • The U.S. House of Representatives Internet Law Library maintains a searchable version of the Code of Federal Regulations.
      • Decisions of the State Courts: Yahoo! provides a directory of links to sites containing state court decisions.
      • Decisions Of The U.S. Supreme Court: The Legal Information Institute (LII), part of the Cornell University Law School, maintains hypertext and searchable court decisions for recent Supreme Court cases.
      • NEPANet contains comprehensive information concerning the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA). NEPANet includes the full text statute; regulations for implementing NEPA from the Council of Environmental Quality (CEQ); Environmental Impact Analysis; Environmental Impact Statements (EIS) filed with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) by State, Week and Year; EPA Review Criteria and Polices and Procedures; the EnviroText Retrieval System, a searchable library that provides easy access to environment, safety and health Federal and State statutes and regulations, as well as Indian Tribal Codes and Treaties, and International Agreements; and NEPA Case Law Review.
      • StateLaw, maintained by the Washburn University School of Law, provides state government and legislative information.
      • Table of Popular Names of Laws as Included in the U.S. Code: The Legal Information Institute (LII), part of the Cornell University Law School, provides links to the U.S. Code by popular name (e.g., the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act), as decided by the Government Printing Office (GPO).
      • U.S. Federal Courts Finder: Emory Law School maintains links to recent court decisions from the U.S. circuit courts of appeals.
      • The U.S. House of Representatives Internet Law Library maintains links to U.S. state and territorial law sites.
      • The Legal Information Institute (LII), part of the Cornell University Law School, maintains a hypertext and searchable version of the Uniform Commercial Code.
      • The Legal Information Institute (LII), part of the Cornell University Law School, maintains a hyperlinked and searchable version of the United States Code.
      • The Libraries of the University of California offer the service GPO Gate, a gateway to the full-text databases, including the United States Code, made available by the GPO Access service of the Government Printing Office in Washington, D.C.
      • Emory Law School maintains a hypertext version of the United States Constitution.
      • WWW Servers, sponsored by the U.S. Federal Government Information Exchange, provides directories for Federal governmental sites. Of note, users can search by Executive, Judicial, or Legislative Branch.

        Federal Government Sites:
         

      • The Bureau of Labor Statistics, the principal fact-finding agency for the Federal Government for labor economics and statistics, includes current and historical data, the economy at a glance, publications, regional Information, and research papers.
      • The Bureau of the Census offers the latest economic indicators with tables, United States and world population estimates, press releases and tip sheets, and audio clips and transcripts from the Census Radio Broadcast Service. The site also allows users to browse by subject. Customize the data to your needs -- try out the on-the-fly mapping and census information software!
      • The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) provides helpful consumer and business information, including press releases and publications. Or browse CPSC "success stories."
      • The Council on Environmental Quality provides environmental information. Of note is NEPANet, a detailed site of information and materials related to the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), including the full text statute; and the EnviroText Retrieval System, an on-line searchable library providing easy access to environment, safety and health Federal and State statutes and regulations, as well as Indian Tribal Codes and Treaties, and International Agreements.
      • The Department of Commerce maintains new reports, press releases, and conference announcements; speeches, Commerce publications and additional information about the Department of Commerce; and links to Department of Commerce Agencies and Information Services, including STAT-USA, which provides access to the the Budget of the United States Government, Fiscal Year 1997.
      • The Department of Education provides recent news, which includes press releases and transcripts of speeches and testimony; the Teacher's Guide to the Department of Education and the Researcher's Guide to the Department of Education; discussions of grant allocation and financial assistance matters for education; and full text publications.
      • The Department of Justice provides Justice links to Department organizations and recent Justice Department issues and news. Of note are the Justice Department Gophers, which include archives of press releases as well as detailed information Department actions, including antitrust.
      • The Department of Labor (DOL) provides information about the DOL and Department agencies, access to the DOL Government Information Locator Service (GILS), press releases, statutory and regulatory information, and labor-related data.
      • The Department of the Treasury provides an assortment of resources, including testimony before Congress; information about fighting financial crimes via the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN); current sanctions and embargo information from Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Control; and links to other Treasury Department Bureaus.
      • The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) includes a description of the EPA and its duties; EPA news and events; information on rules, regulations, and legislation; EPA publications; and environmental test methods and guidelines.
      • The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) maintains the Daily Digest, information on broadcast spectrum auctions, consumer information, the full-text and commentary for the Telecommunications Act of 1996, forms, speeches by FCC officials, and information on fees.
      • The Federal Trade Commission maintains press releases; information on Commission actions; Commission speeches and articles; information on conferences, hearings, and workshops; the FTC ConsumerLine, providing facts for consumers; details on consumer protection rules and guides. As well, users can join the Bureau of Consumer Protection's interactive discussion of privacy issues.
      • The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) maintains the Digital Daily, an atypical IRS publication with splashy graphics, contemporary writing, and practical information. Of course, the Digital Daily also contains nuts-and-bolts tax forms, publications, and information.
      • The Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) offers general information about patents and trademarks, details about USPTO services, United States and international legal materials. As well, users can search the U.S. Patent Database.
      • The Securities and Exchange Commission maintains daily issues; information about the SEC; "What Every Investor Should Know;" the EDGAR database of corporate information; SEC news digests and public statements; information for small businesses; current SEC proposals and final rules; and information on the SEC Enforcement Division.
      • The U.S. Business Advisor is a service of the Federal Government for businesses. The Advisor provides "business with one-stop access to federal government information, services, and transactions."
      • The U.S. House of Representatives provides public access to legislative information as well as information about Members, Committees, and Organizations of the House and to other U.S. government information resources. This site contains a tutorial on the legislative process, as well as a reference for currents bills and resolutions before Congress.
      • The United States Senate provides online information from and about the members of the Senate, Senate Committees, and Senate leadership and support offices. This evolving service also provides general background information about U.S. Senate legislative procedures, Senate facilities in the U.S. Capitol, and the history of the Senate.
      • The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) provides information for starting, financing, and expanding a small business. In addition, the SBA includes details about SBA Programs and a shareware library of programs to run a business.
      • The White House maintains a wealth of executive branch information in simple-to-use formats. Of note are the Economic Statistics Briefing Room (ESBR) and the Social Statistics Briefing Room (SSBR), which contain a selection of Federal statistics as reported by Federal agencies; the Interactive Citizens' Handbook, a guide to information and services from the Federal government; The Virtual Library, which allows users to search White House documents, listen to speeches, and view photos; and the Briefing Room, which contains, among other services, daily press releases.
         
        Ethics Resources:
         
      • An Approach to Ethical Decision-Making contains an abridged version of the article "Thinking Ethically: A Framework for Moral Decision Making," developed by Manuel Velasquez, Claire Andre, Thomas Shanks, and Michael Meyer. The article provides a useful schematic for approaching ethical problems.
      • The University of British Columbia's Centre for Applied Ethics features information about numerous sub-disciplines of Applied Ethics, including Health Care Ethics, Business Ethics, Professional Ethics, Environmental Ethics, Media Ethics, and Computer Ethics.
      • The University of St. Thomas is one of a handful of schools in the country that devotes significant resources to programs emphasizing ethics education.
      • The Corporate Conduct Quarterly (CCQ) discusses corporate ethics and compliance.
      • The Depaul University Institute for Business and Professional Ethics intends, as its main mission, to foster ethical behavior and teach and train individuals to think before they act. The Institute maintains a wealth of resources, including articles relating to ethics.
      • Ethics Connection, maintained by the Markkula Center for Applied Ethics at Santa Clara College, provides current and past issues of Issues in Ethics, case problems for ethics, and more!
      • Ethics Updates, maintained by Lawrence M. Hinman, may be used by ethics instructors and their students. Ethics Updates provides brief discussions of a variety of theoretical and applied topics in ethics, sample syllabi and course resources for ethics, and links to full-text versions of classic works in moral philosophy.
      • Legalethics.com provides links and references to ethics rules, regulations, and articles relating to the integration of the Internet with law and ethics.
      • The Institute For Global Ethics is an independent, nonsectarian, and nonpolitical organization dedicated to elevating public awareness and promoting the discussion of ethics in a global context. The Institute poses a "Monthly Dilemma" and asks for your response.
      • The Institute for the Study of Applied and Professional Ethics at Dartmouth College has limited resources, but does maintain a nice collection of "ethics tidbits."

        Professional Codes of Ethics:
         

      • The Academy of Management's "Code of Ethical Conduct" states that, above all, "We believe in discovering, sharing and applying managerial knowledge."
      • British Petroleum (BP) lays out the company's ethical philosophy in, "What We Care About." In BP's words, "BP takes its responsibilities as a global corporate citizen seriously."
      • Ciba Corporation's "A Vision for Business" and "Vision 2000" provide, as the names imply, a general philosophy for the company to follow. In a nutshell, this Ciba intends to "strike a balance between [its] economic, social and environmental responsibilities."
      • The "Code of Conduct for United States Judges" (1995-96 ed.) offers the ethical rules federal judges follow.
      • Intel Corporation's "Mission and Values" statment declares that employees will "[d]o a great job for our customers, employees and stockholders by being the preeminent building block supplier to the computing industry worldwide."
      • Lockheed Martin's "Code of Ethics and Business Conduct": "summarizes the virtues and principles that are to guide [Lockheed Martin's] actions in business." This code, in theory, governs operations of agents, consultants, contractors, representatives, and suppliers as well as employees.
      • Rockwell, in "The Rockwell Credo," lays out its most important beliefs.
      • The Body Shop provides "Our Values Report," among other statements of ethical conduct, to browse.
